Tuesday, Dec. 3, IPJ Film Series: "An Army of Peace." This film highlights a Buddhist peace march of over 300 pilgrims in former Khmer Rouge territory in Cambodia, building bridges amongst ordinary people who have been isolated for decades by war. Introductions by Karma Lekshe Tsomo, Visiting Professor of Theological & Religious Studies at USD, and discussion by Kevin Malone, who worked in Cambodian refugee camps on the Thai border in the early 1990s. Thursday, Nov. 21, IPJ Brown Bag Discussion: "Reputation and War: Explaining the Intractability of Territorial Conflict." Dr. Barbara Walter, Associate Professor of Political Science, UCSD, spoke. Details.

Thursday, Nov. 21, Special Event: "Women & Peace: An International Conversation." This event included a West Coast screening of the preview of "Escape from Taliban." The film is a true story based on a three volume best seller entitled Kabuliwala’s Bengali Wife by Sushmita Banerjee. Manisha Koirala, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for India and Nepal and star of "Escape from Taliban" discussed the film and the challenges to women in conflict. Details.

Sunday, Oct. 27, IPJ Film Series: "Between Two Worlds." This documentary was filmed by the IRC featuring Muslim teen refugees in San Diego and their experiences. The film was followed by an introduction of cast and production crew, as well as a question-and-answer period. Details.

Friday, Oct. 25, IPJ Speaker Series: Palden Gyatso, a Tibetan monk who was imprisoned and tortured for thirty-three years, spoke. Details.

Wednesday, Oct. 23, IPJ Brown Bag Discussion: "U.S. Foreign Policy from Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush: A Case Study of Afghanistan and Ethiopia." Dr. Pat Drinan, Dean, College of Arts & Sciences, University of San Diego, spoke. Details.

Thursday, Sept. 19, IPJ Brown Bag Discussion: Dr. Kamal Beyoghlow, Professor of International Relations and National Security, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, VA, spoke. Details.

Wednesday, May 22, "From Monterrey to the Millennium: The Emerging Geopolitical Role of International Development Assistance." This presentation featured speakers Paul B. Thompson President & CEO, Project Concern International, James DeHarpporte, Assistant to Executive Director, Catholic Relief Services and Dr. Joyce Neu, Executive Director, Joan B. Monday, May 13, IPJ Film Series: "Uneasy Neighbors." This documentary is a profile of growing tensions between migrant worker camps and affluent homeowners in north San Diego county, one of the richest and fastest-growing areas in the U.S. The film was followed by a discussion with Paul Espinosa, an award-winning Independent Producer/Writer/Director based in San Diego. Thursday, May 9, "World Peace is Inevitable." Dr. Robert Muller, Chancellor at the Universidad de la Paz in Costa Rica, spoke. Details.

Monday, May 6, "An Ounce of Prevention: Efforts to Prevent Deadly Conflict." Dr. Charles Jefferson presented an overview of conflict prevention as a topic of international discussion. Details.

Tuesday, April 23, IPJ Film Series: "Prelude to Kosovo: War and Peace in Bosnia and Croatia." Shot on location in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia, this film addresses the ideology of "ethnic cleansing" and the massacres resulting from a nationalist quest for political, cultural and religious domination. The film was followed by a discussion with director, John Michalczyk.

Tuesday, April 16, "Extremism in America: Organized Hate." Detective Cynthia Hanna of Hate Crimes Outreach of San Diego and Keith Akins of the Anti-Defamation League, spoke on topics ranging from organized hate groups to efforts made within San Diego to combat hate. Details.

Thursday, April 4, "Sex, Lies and War: How Soft News Brings Foreign Policy to the Inattentive Public." Dr. Matthew Baum, a Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, presented his research on the influence of "soft" news programs, programs geared towards entertainment rather than news broadcasting, on the perceptions of war, foreign policy, and presidential decision-making.
