  • Peace Forum - Informal dialogue among representatives of IPJ programs, facilitated by Shobha Shrestha, SAP-Nepal. Human right activist Mall K. Sundar was invited to share his knowledge of constitutional assemblies and inclusive electoral models.


August 8, 2006 – IPJ

  • IPJ Daylight Series: "Can Nepalis Build a Peaceful Democracy? A Young Journalist's Perspective." Santosh Shah, youth activist and journalist, presented a brief political analysis and discussed the role of emerging leaders in shaping the budding democracy in Nepal. Details.


August 2006 – Kathmandu, Nepal

  • Peace Radio Project - Production of six IPJ Peace Radio Project segments, in partnership with SAP-Nepal and Equal Access, on negotiation techniques, communication skills, women victims’ rights and experiences, non-governmental organizations’ contribution to peace, the role of emerging leaders in Nepali society, and a five-year reflection on the prospects for sustainable peace in Nepal.

  • Today’s Youth Forum - "Inclusion: Where is the People Power in Politics?" a discussion with Emerging Leaders facilitated by Laura Taylor, IPJ Program Officer.


July 25-27, 2006 – Kathmandu, Nepal

  • Democratic Essentials Summit - "Cross-sector Communication, Negotiation, and Collaboration" for Political Parties and Policymakers, Women and Marginalized Groups, and Emerging Leaders facilitated by Eric Henry and Gardner Heaton, CMPartners, conflict management specialists; the Honorable Annette Mukabera, former Member of Parliament in Uganda; Shobha Shrestha, SAP-Nepal; Laura Taylor, IPJ Program Officer, and Dee Aker, IPJ Deputy Director.
  • Site visits and individual consultations with non-governmental organizations promoting women’s human rights,  social support and micro-credit assistance for sexually-abused women and single women (widows), inclusion of Dalit concerns in the constitution, enhancing communication of issues from rural and remote districts to the capital, and fostering youth participation in decision making.

  • Peace Forum - Informal dialogue among representatives of IPJ programs, facilitated by Anil Khanal, SAP-Nepal. Professor Krishna Pokhrel, political analyst, was invited to review dialogues between Government and Maoist and explore the role of emerging leaders in current political change.

June 14, 2006 – San Diego, CA

  • KPBS Interview - "USD Helps Nepal with Pro-democracy Movement." Dee Aker, Deputy Director, and Laura Taylor, Program Officer/Grant Manager, have been working to help Nepal find peace after a period of chaos. Tom Fudge speaks with them to find out what is happening in the country now. Details.


June 8, 2006 - IPJ

  • IPJ Daylight Series - "When People Take Power: The Pro Democracy Movement in Nepal." Dee Aker, Deputy Director, and Laura Taylor, Program Officer/Grant Manager, reported on their recent work in Nepal and on the challenges that lie ahead for a democratic transition and durable peace in Nepal. Details.


June 7, 2006 - IPJ

  • Special Briefing - "Voices from Nepal: People Power, Politics, and Peace" for the IPJ Leadership Circle on the recent democratic transition and current political climate in Nepal presented by Dr. Dee Aker, IPJ Deputy Director, and Laura Taylor, Program Officer/Grant Manager.  Minendra Rijal, Spokesperson for the Nepali Congress- Democratic Party, and Shobha Shrestha, Program Officer for South Asia Partnerships-Nepal and local IPJ partner, joined the briefing through teleconference to share first-hand accounts and analysis from the political and civil society perspectives, respectively.

  • Peace Forum - An informal dialogue among representatives from past IPJ programs, facilitated by Shobha Shrestha, SAP-Nepal.  The forum provided a platform to share and learn how participants have applied the knowledge and skills that they gained from previous IPJ programs, and to strengthen and build cross-sector relationships.

  • Peace Forum - Informal dialogue among representatives of IPJ programs, facilitated by Tirth Prasad Gywali, Executive Director of SAP-Nepal facilitated the program. Rohit Kumar Nepali, Executive Director of SAP-International, was invited as an expert on good governance, emphasizing the need for accountability, transparency and participation in the upcoming political transition in Nepal.


April-May, 2006 – Kathmandu, Nepal

  • Roundtable Discussion - Women, Politics, and Peace: Working for a Just Society V "Strategic Thinking about Gender Mainstreaming during Conflict Transformation and Democratization" for Women and Marginalized Groups facilitated by Dee Aker, IPJ Deputy Director.

  • Roundtable Discussion - "From Rock Throwing to Brick Laying: The Role of Emerging Leaders in Conflict Transformation" for Emerging Leaders facilitated by Eric Henry, CMPartners, conflict management specialists, Laura Taylor, IPJ Program Officer, and Dee Aker, IPJ Deputy Director.

  • Consultations with Nepali political party leaders to assess the immediate-, short-, and long-term needs and determine how best the IPJ could respond to requests for assistance during the transition to democracy.
